I used to have a rather colourful summary of this book here, but it had a bit too many spoilers in it.
Apparently, it is part of a series called the “the Quincunx Cycle.” Admittedly, I don't see how anything in this book could relate or connect to anything in another book, given how competitively stand-alone the story is. The cycle would also mean it is a part of the highly specific “Southern Ontario Gothic” subgenre of fiction, though that might have more to do with the other books in the series rather than this book specifically. (It isn't the least bit gothic.)
