The Art of Game Design

Jesse Schell

A book on basic ludology that grew to be rather popular simply because it was the only textbook-approaching thing on game design for video games at the time of its publication.

I view it largely as a product of the time. Despite pouring over it rather religiously, I honestly don't remember much about it. (Something shared by its more terse and didactic counterpart.)
